Wedding Flowers For Less

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

By Glenda Erceg Weddings are very expensive. If you are looking for ways to cut wedding expenses you may want to consider the flowers. Even if you want to have the flowers provided by a rather expensive florist there are ways to cut back. If you want flowers that are unique or created by a pricey florist but still need to shave a little from the floral budget you can consider fewer flowers and arrangements. Use the florist of your dreams but order less. If you need to trim more from the floral expenses consider flowers from a local grocery store floral department. Many stores have excellent floral arrangers and they will work with you to create beautiful floral designs. Let’s say neither of the above suggestions is going to work but you still want to have fresh flowers. You can order flowers and put the bouquets together yourself. Or maybe you have a friend or relative who could help with this project. You also could check into hiring a student who is taking classes in floral arranging. Many community colleges offer these courses and the student may also be able to purchase fresh flowers at cost. Many people are very happy with wedding floral arrangements created from silk flowers. If you are creative you can design the bouquets yourself. You may also know someone who can help you with the arrangements. Gather your friends together for an evening of flower bouquet preparations. Have all the flowers and supplies ready, provide some food and have a flower arranging party. Weddings are expensive but you can cut the cost and still have gorgeous flowers for your special day. Managing Your Finances Pays Off

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

By Elizabeth Newberry Almost everyone is in debt at some point in their lives. Being “in debt” doesn’t mean you aren’t properly managing your finances; sometimes being “in debt” simply means you’re currently paying off a loan you used to buy your new house, you’re currently paying off a loan you used to buy your vehicle, or you simply have credit cards that haven’t been completely paid off yet. These kinds of debts are pretty normal and don’t pose any real threat to your credit score unless you fail to pay them back. On the other hand, many Americans are so far in debt that they can’t make regular payments to their creditors, if they’re able to make payments at all. This kind of deep debt can be caused by a plethora of situations; loss of job, incarceration, and a serious illness or injury of a family member are just a few examples. These kinds of examples also don’t mean people are mismanaging their finances; they just happened to be hit with some bad luck that can harm their credit scores. At the same time, this kind of deep debt can be caused by the inability to properly manage finances. Sometimes people apply for, and use, more credit cards than they can pay for. Sometimes people spend more money on clothes and entertainment than they do on their bills. Whatever the reason, their finances are mismanaged, and their credit scores, too, are harmed. Most people know that when their credit scores are poor, they’re going to have a hard time getting loans until they’ve built their credit up again; however, not everyone knows that credit scores also affect insurance policies. People with poor credit scores are viewed as being “high risk” and can have trouble getting an insurance policy, much less an affordable one. Financially plan ahead for emergencies, and manage your finances in the meantime; your future insurance policies depend on it. Indoor Gardening Tips for Jerry Seinfeld

Friday, May 25th, 2007

By Candee Stark “I have no plants in my house. They won’t live for me. Some of them don’t even wait to die, they commit suicide” ~Jerry Seinfeld Come on, admit it….is your thumb not as green as you want it to be? Are you having trouble keeping your house plants alive and healthy? Can you relate to Jerry on this one? Relax….you’re not alone! Many of us (myself included at times) have felt that fake plants were our only option because we seemed to have the “touch of death” when caring for plants. Read on to find out how 10 simple changes will make you feel like a “natural born gardener”! Top 10 Indoor Gardening Tips for Jerry Seinfeld…and the rest of us!
1. Plants will “reach” toward a light source, so rotate your plant occasionally to promote straight growth. 2. Pay attention to the lighting requirements for your indoor plants. If your plant isn’t getting enough light it will appear “thin and leggy” looking. You can alleviate this problem by only buying plants appropriate for the light already in your home, or by providing an additional light source(artificial lighting). Buying plants that need medium to low light are a “safe bet” for most homes. Think before you buy! Helpful Hint: Indoor plants can be placed outside during the warm summer months. 3. Use room temperature water when watering your indoor plants. Soak thoroughly but make sure plants aren’t allowed to sit in water as this can cause the roots to rot, proper drainage will alleviate this. Different plants have different watering needs but you can use this jingle to help you remember the basics….. ~Too dry, plant will die
Water fills pot, roots will rot!
~Candee Stark 4. Give your plants a bath! Just like children, plants need to be hosed down to rid them of dirt, dust, and grime. It is highly recommended to bath your kids daily but your plants only need it occasionally! Place your plant in your kitchen sink or bathtub and use the spray attachment to gently rinse it off. Use lukewarm water and allow your plant to air dry before returning it to its regular location. 5. Plants improve the quality of household air but remember plants can suffer if kept in air that is always smoky, stagnate or overly dry. Do yourself and your plants a favor by opening the windows and allowing fresh air to come into the house at least several times a week. 6. As with humans, most house plants do well in a daytime temperature range of 65-75 and ten degrees lower at night. Pay attention to your plant, if it isn’t looking well a change in temperature might be all it needs to get back on the right track. Helpful Hint: Don’t overheat your house~your plants will thank you! 7. Keep the care tag for each plant you buy. This way you will remember the name of the plant and what type of individual care it needs to stay healthy. I have made this mistake many, many times thinking I would remember how to take care of the plant and after a few months I couldn’t even remember the name of the plant! Helpful Hint: Buy yourself a small spiral notebook and tape your care tags inside. Also include: purchase date, fertilizer dates, and the dates that you have repotted. Your plants will thrive because of it! 8. Your indoor plants need to be “fed” often because vital nutrients are flushed out of the soil each time you water. You can opt to use a slow release fertilizer that is added to the soil or you can use a liquid fertilizer that is added in small amounts when you water your plant. Don’t fertilize in winter, instead, fertilize regularly during growing and flowering stages. (March-October) Helpful Hint: If you find it hard to remember when you last fertilized, write yourself a quick reminder on your calendar for when to do it next. This isn’t an exact science but your plants will tell you if you are fertilizing too much by having burned or dried leaves….fertilize less frequently if you notice this. 9. When growing plants indoors in containers, do not use soil from the garden as it does not yield good results. Outdoor soil can contain insects, weeds, and disease-causing organisms that can actually harm other healthy plants already living indoors. Additionally, outdoor soils become compacted when put into small containers. This will lead to problems with the plant’s roots and might also impede drainage. 10. We all need room to grow and plants do too! When you notice that roots are coming out of the drainage hole or seem thick and/ or matted, it is time to repot your plant. Helpful Hint: When picking a container/pot for your house plants, make sure it will drain properly. I know what you are probably thinking…many pots are sold without drainage holes! If you find one that you are absolutely in love with drill a hole in the bottom of the container, otherwise your plant will almost certainly die. Without a drainage hole, water collects in the pot and causes damage to the roots. If this isn’t an option you can double pot your plant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Are you feeling a bit more hopeful? I hope you and Jerry run out and buy a new plant for your home. If you still don’t get the results you were hoping for, maybe a cactus garden is the thing for you! Just teasing and happy gardening! The Ins and Outs of Wedding Invitations

Monday, May 21st, 2007

By Dawn Arkin You have been asked by the man of your dreams to marry him and you said yes. There are so many details to plan, so many things to arrange. One of the crucial things you need to do is send out the invitations. Once you have decided on your wedding date, time and location, you will want your guests to be informed. You should mail your invitations a month before the wedding date, so they arrive at least three weeks in advance. There are several things you have to do before you can start sending out invitations. First you need to compile your guest list. Your budget will determine how many guests you can invite, both to your wedding and your reception. This number should be divided between you and the groom. You should sit down with the groom, his parents and your parents to decide who should and shouldn’t be invited. Be firm when you do this. Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into inviting more people than you can afford. You want the people who have been part your life to be part of your special day. Once you have your list, you will need to order your invitations. A good rule of thumb is to order at least 25 extra invitations and envelopes than you need. There are going to be mistakes made in addressing envelopes and last minute invites to contend with. Having extras on hand is cheaper than having to order more at the last minute. If you are a creative person and have a personal computer and good quality printer, you might consider making your own invitations. Paper companies have wonderful do-it-yourself kits to make your wedding invitations and it could be a fun afternoon for you and your bridesmaids. Also, making extra invitations as needed is much easier and can be done at any hour of the day or night without waiting for delivery. Now that you have your list and invitations, it’s time to address your envelopes. But how should you go about doing this? First off, be sure you know the correct title for each of the guests. Beside the standard Mr. and Mrs., there are other titles people go by as well. Dr., Ms., Reverend, Captain, Honorable are just a few of the different ways people can be addressed. If you are uncertain, ask. There are going to be some guest’s invitations that will require a little more finesse when addressing. 1. If one of your guests is a widow you can address the invite Mrs. Sam Jones. If she is divorced either Mrs. Carla Jones or Ms. Carla Jones is acceptable. 2. If a guest is 18 or over and still living in their parent’s home, you can either send them their own invitation or you can list them on their parent’s invitation below the parent’s name on the outer envelope. 3. If your guest is living with another person without being married or they are a married couple with different last names, address the invite with both names on its own line. 4. If you are inviting guests and their underage children, you can either place “and Family” after the parent’s names or list the children’s names under the parent’s names on the inside envelope. 5. If you are allowing your single guests to bring a friend, then place the invited person’s name and the words “and guest” on the inside envelope. Once you get your invitations addressed and ready to send out, you will need to find out how much postage you will need to send them. Take a finished invitation, with everything you will have inside it, and have it weight at the post office. They can tell you how much each invitation will take in postage to send. Do not forget you will need postage for the reply envelope, so have one of those with the reply card inside so you will know how much that postage will be. Purchase enough postage for both complete invitation and reply envelope. The post office has many beautiful stamps to choose from. If you are sending invitations to foreign countries, the postage will be higher than US destinations. Also, do not place postage on the reply envelope for foreign invitations. Each country has its own postage rules. The guest will have to put postage from their country on in order for it to be mailed from their country. If you really want to pay for the postage, consider purchasing International Reply Coupons for the reply envelope. Planning a wedding can be a wonderful, hectic time. But with a little pre-planning, sending out your invitations can be hassle free and fun to do. Dawn Arkin is a writer who loves to plan and attend weddings. Herbs For Anxiety And Depression - A Safer Choice?

Friday, May 18th, 2007

By David Down Many of us, perhaps most, will admit to feeling anxious on a regular basis and often even depressed, perhaps due to pressures of work, home life, or any of a multitude of other causes. However most of us are not clinically depressed or anxious, to the point where our lives and health are affected detrimentally. The minority who do find their lives blighted by these conditions can often be found to be suffering from one or all of the following: self harm and potentially suicidal thoughts, insomnia, lack of sex drive, inactivity and tiredness, and lack of concentration. Certainly where someone is feeling so anxious or depressed that the medical profession would categorize them as clinically depressed or anxious immediate help should be sought from a professional. However where someone is suffering from a milder form of anxiety then there may be alternatives to the common anti-depressant drugs that often appear to make things worse for less serious cases. Alternative treatments could include herbs for anxiety and depression, although it is always wise to seek medical help before starting any herbal medications, especially if you are already taking any other forms of medication. Popular herbs for anxiety and depression include St. Johns Wort, Kava, Passion Flower, Ginseng and SAM-e, and many have reported positive benefits to taking these herbs. St. Johns Wort probably has the largest body of supporting evidence and is widely used. Again remember that you should consult your physician before taking any medication, even herbal, and do not take multiple herbal remedies at the same time without consultation with a professional. There exists a significant problem in taking herbs for anxiety and depression, and other ailments, and that is that unlike other medications government and international drug regulation agencies are not required to test and approve their use. This can mean that drugs could become available that have unforeseen side effects. However many herbs have been used in medical applications for much longer than their modern chemical counterparts and so there exists a large body of admittedly anecdotal evidence backing their medicinal properties. The critical point to remember is that there are no guarantees with herbal treatments, and care must be taken to ensure you are not exposing yourself to additional problems and side effects. There is little doubt a herbal substitute for a conventional drug, used in moderation, should provide some relief with less of the addictive dangers associated with prescription meds, but it cannot always be assumed that herbs will be a safer option. Do not assume they are a miracle cure and always take heed of the dosage recommendations. Visit http://www.dietdiscussions.info for diet and health articles, reviews and information. Anxiety Disorder Treatments: The Best Herbal Remedies for Anxiety

Friday, May 11th, 2007

By Tess Thompson Anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental health disorders and affect the lives of millions of people every year, including approximately 19 million in the U.S. alone. If you are one of them, you may wonder if your symptoms are standard, and if there are behavioral and medical treatments that might be effective for you. While everyone experiences anxiety in some form — perhaps before giving a public presentation or in the midst of major life changes — those with anxiety disorders experience it unusally often and irrationally. There are many different types of anxiety disorders, each of which have unique features, but all of them share the symptoms of dread and excessive fear. Five common types are panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. As with most disorders, each individual will experience symptoms slightly differently, and response to treatment will vary as well. While there are prescription medications for anxiety, for those who are wary of the side effects there also exist natural treatments for anxiety which contain herbal ingredients that can produce equally positive effects. Passion flower (or Passiflora Incarnata) is a natural ingredient that is often used for anxiety relief, as well as to treat hyperactivity, insomnia, nervous tension and even Parkinson’s Disease. Passion flower helps to calm and soothe and is believed to be able to reduce nervous tremors and lower high blood pressure. Lavendar (or Lavandula Augustifolia) is one of the most popular natural ingredients for treatment of a variety of conditions, including anxiety disorder. Lavendar is a general tonic for the nervous system and is well-known for it’s calming properties, making it among the most effective of natural panic attack treatments. The active ingredients in lavendar are tannins, flavinoids, coumarins, triterponoids and volatile oil. Lemon Balm (or Melissa Officinalis) is a natural ingredient that is used as a resorative for the nervous system and also calms the digestive system and reduces blood pressure. Lemon Balm has also been used to treat Grave’s disease (hyperthyroidism), and to treat depression and insomnia. There are no quick fixes for anxiety disorder and anxiety disorder treatments should usually focus heavily on behavioral therapy. No matter how many times you might hear that you “worry too much” or that you should relax, your symptoms are not character flaws but indications of a serious disorder that is not your fault. Anxiety disorder is caused by biological, physiological and genetic factors, and may make your life seem stressful and difficult. There are many others like you who have found effective treatment through therapy, medication, herbal remedies for anxiety or some combination of the aforementioned, and you too have the ability to overcome your disorder to lead a happier, healthier life. Estate Planning - Protecting Your Assets from the State

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

By Ronald Hudkins It isn’t just the US Government waiting out there to grab a chunk of your hard earned estate when you become incapacitated or die. Strangely enough, state coffers are frequently enlarged through the mechanism of Medicaid. When someone requires long-term care in a nursing home, unless he or she has a private long-term care insurance policy, their whole estate may belong to the state when they pass on. Nursing home care is not free, even in county or state operated facilities. Someone, somewhere, has to foot the bill. If you, or your family, does not have resources to pay for the care, Medicaid steps in. While Medicaid is a federal program, funds are allocated to the states for administrative purposes and are subject to state rules and regulations. People who apply for Medicare aren’t always aware of exactly how the program works, but even more sadly, most people who are forced to apply for Medicare really have no other choice, so it doesn’t matter how it works. By the same token, Medicaid rules have been revised so that if one half of a married couple requires nursing home care, the other spouse doesn’t have to sell the house and live on the street. Under the most recent Medicaid rulings, when one spouse has to be in a nursing home for 30 days or more, the couple’s assets are assessed and some assets are excluded by virtue of “spousal impoverishment” rules. The couple’s residence is excluded from the asset evaluation, along with household furnishings and personal effects. In some states, the remaining spouse’s IRAs are exempted, as well. The non-ailing spouse is then entitled to half of any remaining assets, subject to minimum and maximum limits, while the other half must be spent on the nursing home care. In addition, income like Social Security, some pensions, and some interest dividends are subject to “maintenance allowance,” rules designed to allow the healthy spouse enough money to live on. If, for example, the Social Security Income or other pension income is in the remaining spouse’s name, he or she is entitled to keep it for living expenses. In some cases, the spouse at home can receive more than half of the marital assets, particularly if his/her income falls below minimum levels. If there is no spouse, in many states the individual requiring nursing home care is required to sign over his or her home to the state to reimburse Medicare. When the nursing home stay is not permanent, the Medicaid recipient is allowed to live in the house until death, but cannot pass it on to children or other heirs, because it actually belongs to the state, not to the individual. Estate planning, particularly if it involves some sort of long-term care insurance, can alleviate or eliminate some of the worries associated with the potential for requiring nursing home care. Talk to your attorney or other estate planner about what can be done to protect your remaining assets if you have to go to a nursing home. About Ronald E. Brief Guide to Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

By Eddie Tobey General anxiety disorder, also referred to as GAD, is a feeling of constant fear that rests in one’s mind. It is an ongoing feeling of worry, of impending doom and upsets the daily life of the victim. People suffering from this disorder worry and fret about most of the things whether social, political, environmental, athletic, academic or artistic. A free-floating anxiety or apprehension generally characterizes this condition. It need not be associated to a specific cause or situation, but people eventually inculcate the habit of worrying without any reason. People with this disorder live with a constant fear of failure in their minds, even if they have been successful in the past. They don’t mind going great lengths to perfect everything they are involved in. Adolescents with this disorder constantly yearn for praise as they are pretty uncertain and insecure about themselves. They develop a very pessimistic outlook towards life. A person suffering from GAD often has chronic, recurrent episodes of anxiety that last for several days, weeks or even months. This disorder is a little more common amongst females as compared to males, and is found to occur in about 2 to 3 per cent of the general population. A number of reasons can be listed down for GAD. Some people are genetically prone to developing it. Other factors include traumatic and disturbed childhood, stressful life events like a job change, a move, death of a beloved, marital spat or separations. Heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, nausea, easy fatigue, restlessness or feeling edgy, irritability, erratic sleep patterns and disturbances, muscle tension and difficulty in concentrating are some of its vital symptoms. The best way to deal with GAD is to consult a physician, who will thoroughly diagnose a patient’s condition, based on the description of the various symptoms. Certain medical conditions may also trigger off these symptoms, like substance abuse, heart disorders, thyroid disease, hypoglycemia or conditions such as depressive disorders. The patient may be advised tranquilizers, antidepressant drugs along with psychotherapy (both psycho-dynamically oriented as well as cognitive behavioral psychotherapy). A number of techniques such as relaxation exercises, breathing exercises and distraction that is, taking the anxiety out of one’s mind by focussing on other things have proved quite effective in getting over GAD.
