Make Your Winter Wedding Safer With Proper Winter Wedding Planning

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Christy Baker When it comes to planning a wedding there are many things that needed to be taken into consideration. This is especially true of you are taking part in a winter wedding planning and organization meeting. Although most weddings take place during the spring and summer months a winter wedding can be a very beautiful and romantic ceremony. In fact, many brides dont realize just how special a winter wedding ceremony can be since common tradition dictates that most couples get married at different times of the year. Naturally winter wedding planning involves taking into consideration the biggest factor that can cause problems on that special day for the respective bride and groom the weather. Without a doubt the possibility of a winter wedding getting snowed out, especially if an outdoor winter wedding is planned, requires that a backup plan must be thoroughly thought out in case it needs to be used. A good rule of thumb is to keep an eye on the weather forecasts for the week leading up to the winter wedding ceremony. For the bride, special attention must be given to her dress. All efforts must be taken to keep it as clean and presentable as possible. Naturally, you dont want to get any dirt, water or snow on the brides wedding gown. Although the idea of an outdoor wedding sounds like the perfect wedding day event, it is probably better to go ahead and plan on having your wedding indoors in order to alleviate depending on the cooperation of the weather. Hopefully, this extra precaution will prevent having to cancel your wedding even if it snows excessively outside. Make sure to consult with a professional wedding planner. More then likely they will have some experience with planning a wedding during the winter months. Make sure to heed their advice and just imagine how beautiful and special your wedding will be with a winter backdrop. How To Avoid Post Workout Binges And Lose Those Last 10 Pounds In 3 Easy Steps

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

By Naweko San-Joyz I was so embarrassed for her. After a grueling 45 minutes on the Stairmaster, Kathy rewarded herself with a bag of Ruffles and a Diet Coke. Yet still insatiable, she drank two breakfast drinks and finished off little Emilys last five Oreos. Kathys post workout binges are nothing new. Neither are the extra 10 pounds living around her hips that she cant seem to lose. But once Kathy puts these simple three steps to good use, she smile gaily as her last 10 pounds melt away. Step 1: Eat at least 45 minutes before you exercise. Ok, if you are now envisioning guilt eating and compensation exercising stop. This is not about eating a chocolate bar now and exercising it off later. Its about, giving your body the energy it needs to sustain a good 45-60minute workout. Eat a light snack consisting of 300-500 calories. This could be a bagel, with a slice of turkey and a whole tomato. Or it could be a protein bar. The point is to get some carbohydrates, proteins and fats in your system now so that it has something to run on later. With this pre-workout meal, carbohydrates are critical because you want energy for your workout. Eating 45 minutes before a workout will not make you fat. If anything, it will spend up your metabolism if you do this regularly. Step 2: Drink lots of water while exercising Your body should be 70% water and it knows this. When exercising, you could easily lose up to three pounds of water during one exercise. Please dont beat yourself up if you dont lose three pounds. I watch women get upset at the gym everyday after their post-workout weighting ritual, if they havent lost weight. The weight will come off. If you drink while exercising, you may be able to exercise longer. But more importantly your body will not have to cry out for water after you finish exercising. Also, water can give you the sensitive of fullness so that you can calmly wait for your post workout meal without getting ravenous. Step 3. Eat a meal at least 45 minutes after you workout. Even if you are not hungry after your workout, you should train yourself to eat within 45 minutes of exercising. The body is patient and it will take a lot of mistreatment up to a point. The problem with waiting until you are hungry to eat is that the body continues doing gazillion operations until you decide to eat. This usually when you get the Gosh, I hungry now! feeling. In truth, at this stage, youre not hungry, youre famished and you have no time or patience to be judicious with what you eat. Whats more, youre more likely to overeat. So, feed your body with a 300-500 calorie meal within 45 minutes of exercising. Again, make sure that this meal has carbohydrates, proteins and fats. For the post-workout meal, eating a lean protein proves critical because your body is in repair mode and it needs protein to rebuild your body. If you can avoid post-workout binges for the next five weeks, you can certainly melt away those last 10 pounds. Heres the secret to never having an excuse for not eating your pre and post-workout meals: Make your meals simple and place them in your purse or gym bag. On occasion your can even replace a meal with a well-balanced protein shake. Now, no more embarrassing post-workout pig fests, you know what to do instead. Are you a pro at yo-yo dieting? Let Naweko show you how to go from slob to sexy using the secret mind tools that even fitness models wont tell you about. Diamonds Set The Stage For Winter Weddings

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

By George Benckenstein Your imaginations the limit when planning a winter wedding once youve decided upon a theme. If in fact diamonds are a girls best friend, shouldnt these icy wonders take center stage at her ceremony? A brides engagement and wedding rings aside from the eternal love of her husband-to-be are the only daily reminders of her wedding day, says John Pollard, Whiteflash.com, an online diamond and jewelry boutique. When a diamond is a show-stopper, its only fitting that a bride would plan her wedding around it. Whiteflash.com is known for its show-stopping Hearts & Arrows diamonds. The companys expert diamond cutters specialize in Hearts & Arrows diamonds referring to the patterning seen through the top and bottom of the gem signifying a diamond of the highest quality. Helping soon-to-be-wedded couples select their eternal symbols of love the all-important wedding rings — has exposed (Insert Client Name) to her share of wedding plans. With (insert number of years) of pre-nuptial experience, (Insert Client Name) offers some unique ideas about planning a diamond-studded winter wedding. A Wintry Backdrop Consider icy blue, subtle lilac, white and silver as your color palette. These are the colors your diamond reflects under light. An expertly cut diamond, like those from Whiteflash.com, will out-sparkle all others. When the facets of a diamond are proportionately cut, the jewel will attract and reflect the maximum amount of light possible, even in soft and distant lighting conditions, explains Brian Gavin, expert diamond cutter, Whiteflash.com. With each A Cut Above diamond, the companys exclusive brand available only at www.whiteflash.com each and every facet of the gem aligns perfectly a rare (and pricey) occurrence in the industry. Dress to Impress Consider wearing a faux fur wrap or cape to stay warm against chilly drafts. Once indoors reveal a dress embellished with shimmering crystals that mimic your icy diamond jewelry. Speaking of jewelry, be sure to set aside ample time in your wedding planning to select your dream wedding band. Will it be a pave, champaigne, eternity or a halo setting? It all depends on the brides preference, says Gavin. In fact, our jewelry craftsmen can custom-design a ring made especially for her! For your main man, shower him with diamonds as well. One of the hottest trends in wedding bands for grooms is Whiteflash.coms Champaigne wedding band, says Gavin. Sprinkled with 0.14 carats of diamonds inlayed in platinum or white gold, its the perfect complement to the brides diamond stunner. Culinary Delights Let your menu reflect a wintry appetite. Serve your guests hot chocolate upon entering the reception, or offer them a variety of drinks at a gourmet coffee bar. A snow white wedding cake embellished with silver snowflakes and diamond-like crystals will continue your theme. How about a diamond-shaped ice sculpture to enhance your appetizer or dessert table? Dcor to Adore Make a dramatic entrance to the wedding reception with a horse and sleigh. Consider hanging beading or crystals from the ceiling, like icicles. Continue wintry colors in your flower arrangements. Roses, tulips, freesias, hellebores and mums are beautiful in varying shades of white. Ice blue and lilac can be found in iris, freesia, statice and heather. Add crystals, sequins or silvery ribbons to your arrangements to contribute a diamond-like sparkle. Wedding Party Gifts Set your wedding party off in style with diamond-studded gifts. While your bridesmaids carry a stunning bouquet of flowers, match the theme of the day with a glittery pair of Whiteflash.coms Flower Cluster earrings. The six petal clusters are set with 14 A Cut Above melee diamonds from 0.25 1.00 carats. Would you rather show their diamonds off front and center? Perhaps a diamond pendant is your gift of choice. The Whiteflash.com Full Bezel Pendant is a classic sparkler that will remind your bridesmaids of your special day for years to come. Set in platinum, the focus is centered on a diamond of your choosing. Chain length is sixteen inches. John Pollard is the Director of Consumer Education for Whiteflash.com He conducts a public workshop series on diamond education, and was a guest speaker on the internet phenomenon for the American Gem Society at their JCK Workshop Series in Las Vegas. Whiteflash.com is the first company in the U.S. to offer an exclusive brand of Hearts & Arrows diamond and bring the sheer beauty of super ideal cut to the Internet. Brian Gavin, a 5th generation diamond cutter, and Debi Wexler, a computer entrepreneur, together founded Whiteflash.com in 1999 bringing an expansive selection of loose diamonds to the Internet, including an exclusive brand of Hearts & Arrows diamonds. A Cut Above (ACA) is unmatched in its brilliance, fire and sparkle and remains the only Hearts & Arrows diamond sold online with advertised standards and a true patterning guarantee. Warning Signs He - She May Not Be The One

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Lucia Demasi Weve all looked back on past relationships and said, What was I thinking. Problem is, you werent thinking. You were caught up in the chemistry and the wonderful feelings of the moment that you chose to overlook some warning signs that there may be trouble up ahead. Here is a list of things to look out for when dating: CELL PHONE USE: Theres a new disease in town. Its called cell phoneitis. People afflicted with this cannot tear themselves away from their cell phones. Theyll accept a call 24/7. Being out with someone like this can be annoying. Its almost like youre not even there. If you start dating someone and find out they have this disease, you can point out your displeasure - ONE TIME ONLY. If they persist, forget them. Its rude and disrespectful behavior on their part and we dont tolerate that, now do we? DRIVING BEHAVIOR: If you want to know what someone is really like, be a passenger in a car with them. To quote an online traffic school: The stronger the self-image that drivers have, the less threatened they will be by what happens around them. Identifying with one’s vehicle is a symptom of a weak ego. Insecure people imagine everything that happens on the road is a direct threat to them personally. Someone cuts them off, and they must retaliate: “Who do those people think they are to cut me off?” The irrational thoughts of insecure people can keep them constantly upset. Gee, this sounds just like the type of person Id like to date. Not! ME! ME! ME! : I once met a guy that had a one track mind. That is, all that was on his mind was himself. He went on and on about all his accomplishments. I thought it was finally turning around when he said: Enough about me, tell me about you. Before I could get a word out, he was back to his favorite subject! Yup, himself!! What a total turnoff. I think guys are guiltier of this than girls. Sorry. Guys know that some women will be impressed by what theyve done, who they know, etc. They go on and on thinking theyre getting somewhere (closer to the bedroom?). Smart women dont fall for this. We want to engage in a conversation. If we want to see a one man play, well go to the theatre! BOO-HOO-HOO: Dont you just love hanging out with someone that is always complaining? Ah yes, the joys of seeing the glass as half empty. Theres always something wrong or someone that has done them wrong. Arrive at their pity party with some cheese for their whine if you plan to stick around. If not, RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHES A PSYCHO/HES A JERK: If you believe in the law of attraction (we attract/are attracted to that which we are), and the person you start to date says their ex was a psycho or a jerk, what does that make them? You guessed it. Does that mean you too are a psycho or a jerk? Only if you choose to stick around. Just remember, one day YOU will be the psycho or jerk theyll be complaining about to someone else. NAME CALLING: Im surprised at how many people put up with this. What is one of the main reasons for being in a relationship? Because your life is enhanced as a result of that person being in it. Does being called a bitch or a loser make your life better? I can understand someone saying that youre being a bitch or youre acting bitchy, but the next time someone says Bitch! to you, youre only answer should be, Youre right. I am a bitch. Im a Babe In Total Control of Herself as you walk out the door forever. ORAL SEX: In all my years of dating, Ive only run across one guy that didnt want to do oral. In general, girls may have more of an issue with it than guys. Either way, its not a good sign, especially if its important to you. I have a girlfriend whose husband refuses to do it. The poor girl has been relegated to just dreaming about it when shes asleep. Since oral sex is an acceptable part of sex in the 21st century, if someone is unwilling to partake, they obviously have issues. Whether you stick around to see if theyre willing to work on those depends on you, but just keep in mind that this is always a red flag. HANGING UP: Weve all hung up on someone or had someone hang up on us. However, at a certain point, we grow up and realize we cant just go around hanging up on people when were upset or frustrated with them. The proper way to deal with this situation is to say something like, I dont want to talk to you right now. Im going to hang up. Bye. If youre finally at this point and someone hangs up on you, you may think twice about dating them. There are bound to be other maturity issued involved. If however, youre still hanging up on people and someone hangs up on you, then stay together. Those of us that have grown up dont need you on the dating scene bothering us. SOAP OPERAS: This is mainly with respect to guys. Soap operas are the television equivalent of Harlequin romances and just like Secret deodorant, they may be strong enough for a man, but theyre made for a woman. I just dont think guys have any business watching soap operas (sorry CBS, NBC and ABC) unless they are actually on the show and they want to check their performance. I LOVE YOU: Anyone that is professing their love within a few weeks or a few months of meeting you is being insincere and immature. You have to know someone before you can truly love them. Yet people are throwing this phrase around left and right and before you know it, the relationship is over. Its better to err on the side of caution and take too long to say it than to rush it. Of course I dont have to tell you that yelling this out for the first time during a moment of passion doesnt count. There are two things that separate me from almost everyone reading this: Awareness and attitude. Im aware of the red flags and I have the attitude that I will not stick around once I see them. Now that your awareness has been raised, what will YOUR attitude be? Lucia is a dating and relationship expert, columnist, lecturer and host of the TV Show “The Art of Love”. Acrylic Craft Paints

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Debbie Jensen Acrylic paints are so nice to work with. From easy clean-up to an array of brilliant colors―who could ask for more? In working with acrylics, I’ve noticed a few aspects about this water based paint that I’d like to pass on. Most of my art students peers preferred working with acrylic paints as I do, mostly due the affordability of it. I have to say, art professors encouraged the use of it too. In looking back, I’m wondering if professors liked acrylics due to the easy clean-up. Typically, art classrooms are not the cleanest classrooms on campus anyway; and if most students used oils instead, I can’t imagine what the classrooms and sinks would have looked liked! One tip I learned in school had to do with what acrylic paint is actually made of. Acrylic paints are colored liquid plastics (even though some acrylic paints are flat and others are high-gloss). Perhaps this is why acrylic paint is considered to be craft paint. Since it is plastic, acrylics dry quickly which is what most of us want. But, to slow down the drying-out process on your paint palette, put a couple of damp paper towels over it and squirt the paint directly on top of it. Surprisingly, the paint hardly spreads out and absorbs. Unfinished, dry acrylic paints are quick to scratch prior to applying the final finishing touches (sealer paint). When acrylics are applied to tinware, scratches are more susceptible than usual. Even if you are painting on canvas, expect to varnish your paintings upon completion. You can spray on a water base varnish or brush on a water base antique glaze to seal the acrylic paint. Acrylic paints are not only fun to work with, but most assuredly, the results are consistent and durable for both indoor and outdoor use. Career Development - Training For Two (or more) Careers

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Roy Thomsitt The working environment these days is insecure, and there is no such thing as a job for life any more. While some careers are far more secure than others, such as a profession with rare skills like veterinary surgeon or doctor, generally speaking you should not expect to go into a job for life when you leave college or university. You may not even get the type of job you want in the career that you want. When you start to think about career training, it is probably in your interests to be prepared for alternative careers, or maybe careers that can be moved from one industry to another. If you set off on a single track and that route hits a dead end, then you may struggle to redirect yourself into another career. Precisely how you go about dual career training is going to depend on what your first choice career is, and the types of skills that are required for that career. I will use my own example and hope that it may give you some ideas for your own situation. As a teenager I presumed I would make a living from writing, but I was realistic enough to realise that that would not happen overnight, so started working in offices at 18, in order to save money for travelling and take off 6 months at a time to write. I soon realised, back in 1970, that there were two skills that would become increasingly important across a wide range of jobs: finance and computing. With writing in the background, I focused on developing finance and computing skills, and always keep up with developments. As it turned out, like many who aspire to writing, I made no living from that whatsoever; although today, 36 years later, I do. In the meantime, I have metamorphosed through computer systems analysis, computer system testing, qualifying as a management accountant and into project management where all those skills were used. I was able to move from one project to another quite different type of project without too much of a problem. All of that set me up with the business skills and confidence to have my own business in the UK. Looking back, it was important that I kept developing a range of skills and was flexible about moving between jobs and disciplines. I had several career changes along the way, but all built on that original decision to develop skills in finance and computing. All that led to being able to take an occupational pension early, at 50, and carve out a new living online and writing from my dream location, a tropical island in the Philippines. Your situation, aims and ambitions will be very different to mine, but I do believe there are some lessons to be learnt from the way my “careers” have run into each other and from each other. From examining your own experiences, training and ambitions, you may well be able to spot some ways you can better prepare yourself for dual careers or career changes. There could come a day when that is critical. This career development article was written by Roy Thomsitt, owner and part author of the Routes To Self Improvement website. New Marketing And Promotional Ideas

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Steven Gillman New marketing and promotional ideas! Free! Most are related to internet-based businesses, but even those can usually be adopted in some way to other businesses. Here are half a dozen marketing ideas to get you thinking. A one-hour coupon. Offline businesses that want to increase the traffic to their websites can announce an “internet coupon” good for a free drink (or whatever). The coupon would be up on the site for an hour, sometime on a Friday, say. Visitors will return again and again to try to be there at the right time to get the freebie. If you collect pay-per-click advertising fees, this repeat traffic might be especially profitable. Free gift article teaser. A free gift is certainly not a new marketing idea, but it hasn’t been done much in internet article “resource boxes.” My click-throughs from articles increased when I started putting in the author’s resource box, “For more information and a free gift, visit…” The gift is usually a short course, or an e-book. If you don’t want to write an e-book, you can find one with free distribution rights. Word links for sale. Maybe you have heard about the entrepreneur that sold a million pixels on one web page for a dollar each. Advertisers could buy a minimum of 100, and the image would link to their site. I’ve seen many copycats, but I haven’t yet seen anyone selling words. This could be even better for advertisers, because they could buy the words that are relevant to their products. A page full of random words isn’t pretty, but these things get publicity and traffic for their novelty. Product user contests. If you have a product that’s used in many ways or many places, this is a great promotional gimmick: a contest to see who has used their cell phone, watch, or whatever in the wildest place or the most unusual way. (”I took my walkman to the north pole!”) Customers could post their stories and photos directly to your company web site. They wiould return repeatedly to see new stories, and the results of the competition. Advertising on cereal boxes. A lot of time is spent staring at cereal boxes. Perhaps you could get a good rate on advertising on them. There have had some advertising, but no boxes covered in ads yet. Brokering ad space on cereal boxes could be a good business to get into. Pay for article placement. Many of us distribute articles to generate traffic to our web sites, and many also pay to advertise. Since articles are especially good marketing tools, why not pay to have other webmasters put them on their sites? This is done for free now, but not often enough. Maybe offer a small one-time fee, with a minimum time commitment. Explain that leaving the article there forever can generate search engine traffic. Put ads on private cars, advertising on sidewalks, have a contest to see who can get your product mentioned on and seen on TV - there are endless possibilities for new marketing and promotional ideas. Housewarming: An Important Ritual

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Sara Thompson Moving is a universal experience. In our lifetime it has become rare for any person to spend their entire adult life in one home. Whether its a new apartment or a new house, we have all looked at an unfamiliar space and imagined how we will set about making it feel like our own. We picture what will go where, what will fit where, and what we will leave behind. We picture what wed like to change and are thrilled with the parts we love. Each new house is a vehicle for our imagination; it represents all of the possibilities of a new beginning and holds all of the potential for making us feel comfortable and content. Living in a new space is an exciting and often liberating experience, as we get the chance to redefine ourselves through what we create. We also get to experience the unfamiliar (think of the first night you sleep in a new house!); which can be both a comfort and discomfort at the same time. So, the furniture is in, the pictures are hung, yet the house still has that brand new, not-worn feeling. The process of creating that feeling of ‘home’ in a new house actually happens after we move all of our stuff in and feng shui until our backs ache from moving the couch. It is when we invite in the sounds of friends and family that those new rooms come together to create a home. An important way we customarily mark our passage into a new house is by having a Housewarming party. The Housewarming is one of the greatest rituals of all time-a tradition where friends, family, and neighbors help us celebrate a new beginning. There are some crucial variables to a successful housewarming: good people, good food and lots of laughter. It doesnt matter if there are five or fifty friends celebrating your move; the sounds of their laughter and yours will warm every room and transform a house into your home. Sara Thompson is the owner of The Original Nutcracker , a website which sells a bold, funny kitchen gadget thats tongue-in-cheek fun! Psychotherapy

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By Christina Sponias There are two types of depression. One type starts when a tragic event happens, usually with death or a separation, and the other type of depression appears suddenly and seems not to have any particular reason for manifesting. In the first case, the solution is a philosophical comprehension of the meaning of life and the meaning of death; this helps depressed people accept their suffering without revolt. If this is your situation, I recommend you read my ebook Wisdom that was written specially in order to give support to people that are suffering constantly for any reason. You can find it on my website.
The tragic loss of someone we love, especially if this person is young, is something we dont every really overcome. The depression we feel seems unbearable it seems we have no hope of finding relief! However, time will pass, and without understanding how, we always do overcome it, even though the sadness wont disappear completely from our life. But sometimes, this depression becomes worse instead of being slowly cured by time, and then we face despair. If things are this way for you, you certainly need more help. Ive almost finished my ebook about dream decoding that is sure to help you immensely, but for the time being, Ill help as much as I can through my articles in this ezine. You have to have in mind that the human being is wild, and he cant understand how far he actually is from psychical health. He has only a tiny human conscience which he knows only partially. Even this is mainly absurd, since it is based in his Ego and therefore, selfish. If he suffers a lot on this planet, it is because he is too absurd. He provokes his own suffering, and he destroys his personality instead of developing it. He makes only mistakes during his life, one after the other. He doesnt learn anything from them, though, and so he doesnt become better. You have to understand that your suffering now is not something without any meaning that is only eroding you. You have to develop all your psychological functions, and become very sensitive in order to have psychical health. This process can only be completed through suffering. Sometimes we need to suffer more in order to learn more and to be transformed. What is happening to you now is not something without meaning, that could (or even should) be avoided. You have to overcome your depression by accepting this suffering like a hero. This is the only way you can transform your nature and become a wise and balanced person that can help others overcome their problems too. If your depression is unexplainable, then you more than anyone else, need psychotherapy through dream interpretation! This is the only safe and guaranteed way you have to be able to discover the real reason for your depression, since the unconscious that produces your dreams knows everything about you and your life. Ill try to give you some information about dream interpretation in my next articles, even though this can really be done properly only through a book or ebook - youll have to return to my past lessons several times, before proceeding. These articles are not chapters of a book; they each have a defined end. I cant expect you to keep all of them and make a collection with my articles though, so that you can have an ebook about depression and how we can cure it. I dont even know if you are a regular reader or if you are reading this ezine and one of my articles for the first time. So, I cant explain too much this way. I can only give you short lessons, but they can still be very helpful if you take my advice seriously. Ive helped many people overcome serious psychical diseases and serious existential problems. I know that your depression is very serious, no matter whether it was provoked by a tragic event, or you dont really know its origin. Of course it cant be compared with the common sadness that we often hide from others, so that people wont worry about us, we wont have to give them embarrassing explanations that upset us, etc. But you have to behave as if your very serious and unbearable depression is only a common sadness that you have to hide from other people, mainly in order to make them feel better near you. You dont want to be a burden for everyone because you are weak. Do you? This way youll discipline yourself to acquire the resistance you need in order to completely overcome your depression eventually! So, stop complaining, hide the fact you only want to stay in a corner crying, and start pretending you are strong. The more you can show this attitude, the more youll really overcome the inner feelings of depression. If however you feel you absolutely cannot do it, dont insist. Perhaps your psychical condition wont let you help yourself. You may need more help from outside. Ask for more help - tell everyone that you are desperate. Go to a psychologist, look for a person that is spiritual and can illuminate you, do something! Dont just stay in this condition, without any action.
Define your psychical illness and start curing your soul: either be a hero and start behaving as if you didnt have any special problem, or accept that you need to be helped as a patient and follow exactly your doctors instructions, with devotion. You are going to reach psychical health, one way or the other. Everything depends on your attitude! During my studies, I came across Carl Jungs method of deciphering dreams, which helped me and urged me to continue his research into the unknown regions of our psychical sphere. I set my poetry aside and began to compile my findings. I sought to prove that Jung had discovered the proper method of interpretation of dreams. This exercise actually taught me many things, and I continued to pursue Jungs research into the analysis of dreams. Business Careers: Keys to Moving on from Retrenchment

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

By Kim Beardsmore You may be astonished to realize that retrenchment may occur more than once during the life of the modern day worker. In fact, career advisors report that we could expect to be made redundant up to three times during our working life. As common as retrenchment is, when it happens, no one likes it. Whatever range of emotions initially emerge - fear, anger, resentment, retaliation, humiliation, disappointment - we should recognise as being quite normal. How we respond and deal with the situation will influence our entire financial future and how quickly we move through these negative emotions. This article will assist those people who may wonder how to deal with retrenchment. These ten keys will help you move on quickly and re-establish yourself in a productive working environment. 1. Don’t take it personally. Redundancy is rarely, if ever, personal. Don’t let it affect your self-confidence and morale. In most cases retrenchments occur as a result of changing economic situations, mergers or acquisitions which are typically outside most people’s span of control. 2. Retrenchment is not an end, but rather a beginning. Even though we may not expect it, throughout various stages of our lives doors close and others open. When one door closes and it is a shock, we may not immediately see other doors opening. 3. Take advantage of outplacement support. If you company provides outplacement support - make full use of it. If no outplacement support has been provided ask if the company could provide assistance with a registered outplacement firm. Research has shown that job seekers with the assistance of a qualified outplacement consultant have better strike rate in job interviews. 4. Sort out your finances. Discuss with your partner or spouse your financial position and make adjustments where necessary. Few people realize that this transition may be a gift to help you change directions. Poor financial planning may propel you into a less than favourable job and close down opportunities to explore what you really would like to be doing. 5. Be realistic about time. Expect things to take a while. The more senior your previous job, the longer it will take to find something else at the same level. If you change careers to start your own business it will take time for you to achieve the same feelings of effectiveness. Be patient when making a new transition and go easy on yourself by not expecting too much, too soon. 6. Forget the ‘labels’. Recruitment consultants are rarely concerned with the fact you were retrenched. They are more interested in how you respond when the chips are down and what you did about and how quickly you took control of your situation. It’s not what happens in life that distinguishes us, but rather what we do about it. Very likely the person interviewing you for your next job has been retrenched themselves at some stage! 7. Explore all options. Talk to a specialist career advisor or business coach. This may just be the chance to propel you in a new direction. With assistance you may uncover skills and pathways you may not have previously had the time, inclination or confidence to embrace. Alternate pathways such as owning your own business or franchise may offer you financial security and personal flexibility. 8. Get some exercise. There is limited appeal in sitting around the house in your pajamas until lunchtime. Get up early and get some exercise. The endorphins will keep your mind energetic and creative and assist you through the transition. 9. Volunteer your time to a worthwhile cause that interests you.
This will help keep your self esteem high and provide activities that may help you explore new avenues, or maintain your current skills. At the very least it will keep you busy and stop your brain turning into “TV-mush”. 10. Feed your spirit. Finding exhilarating testimonies of people who succeed against all odds. If you are not an avid reader, then now is the time to start and ensure you are keeping your mind positively challenged with the heroes of our time. It will help keep things in perspective.
