What is a Rain Garden?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Donna Evans Homeowners across the country are discovering the joys and satisfaction of rain gardens. A rain garden is a landscaped area that actually replaces an area of lawn. Compared to a normal patch of lawn, a rain garden allows 30% more water to soak into the ground. Rain gardens are a good and inexpensive way to prevent the problem of urban stormwater runoff. A rain garden is planted in wildflowers or other native vegetation. As the name implies, rain gardens are designed to soak up rainwater, mainly from the roofs of buildings, parking lots and hard surfaces. A rain garden is designed so that it fills up with a few inches of water after a storm. That water can then slowly filter into the ground, rather than rapidly running off into a storm drain, river or lake. So, why are rain gardens important? Rain gardens can:

help protect streams and lakes from pollutants that are carried by urban stormwater; pollutants such as lawn fertilizers and pesticides, oil and other automotive fluids and harmful substances that wash off roofs and paved areas

increase the amount of water that filters into the ground
enhance the beauty of the yard
create habitat for birds and butterflies
help protect communities from flooding and drainage problems
A typical home rain garden can be in one of two places: 1) near the house to catch roof run-off; or 2) further out on the lawn to collect water from the lawn, roof, and other hard surface areas. Dont put a rain garden: Within ten feet of the house so that water cannot seep into the foundation. Do not put a rain garden where water already ponds  the goal of a rain garden is to encourage infiltration and wet areas are where infiltration is already slow. And do not put a rain garden directly over a septic system. In addition, rain gardens will thrive better in areas where they will receive full or partial sun. Rain gardens can combine shrubs, grasses and flowering perennials. The garden itself is actually a depressed area, which is usually about six to eight inches deep. Rain that flows into the garden is retained in the garden for a short time after a rainstorm. The water slowly infiltrates into the ground or evaporates. The plants in the garden filter the water by trapping pollutants.
Rain gardens are not ponds. Rainwater soaks into the garden, which is then dry between rainfalls.

Rain gardens are not breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes need 7 to 12 days to lay and hatch eggs. The standing water in a rain garden will last for only a few hours.

Once established rain gardens require little maintenance. Some weeding and watering may be required until plants get established.

Six Steps to Planning a Hawaii Beach Wedding From Afar

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Blake Kritzberg There’s much to do when you’re planning a wedding in Hawaii. But as with any destination wedding, a special wrinkle is that you’ll need to take care of many details from far away. And perhaps you’ve never been to Hawaii before. All this can pile some frustration onto your planning, but in the end, there are few places in the world that can compare to the Garden Isle of Kauai, Magic Island off Waikiki, or Oahu’s Paradise Cove, just to name a few of Hawaii’s many jewels. Here’s a quick checklist of things to do and remember when planning a wedding in Hawaii: 1) First, find a location. This is the fun part. Pour over coffee table travel books at the bookstore — try the “From the Skies of Paradise” series, for example. Eventually you’ll settle on an island. 2) Next, you have a second decision to make: should you go with a resort, a wedding planner, or do it all yourself? For most brides, the best bet is to choose a resort package, or book a local wedding planner that specializes in destination weddings. An on-site planner should help you pull together every aspect of your wedding. They’ll recommend vendors, let you know whether that hotel really looks as beautiful as it does in the brochure, and help you work out murky but important details, such as how to seat your guests at the beach, or how transport your guests from the hotel to the ceremony site. An experienced local planner can make a huge difference, but you’ll want to research her carefully before choosing one. The last thing you want is to hire someone who “goes dark” on you. It’s impossible to tell from a web site or a photo whether a planner is responsive and professional. The best way to find a great one is to visit destination wedding boards and ask newlyweds for their recommendations. 3) Next, you’ll want to consider your budget. Can you pay for close family and friends to attend your destination wedding, or will they need to pay their own way? If the budget’s tight, one option is to have a very small wedding on the island and throw a larger reception later, at home. You’ll also need to look at the other aspects of the budget, and consider the fundamental costs of things like ceremony locale, reception locale, lodging, catering, your cake and flowers, and any other services involved in your wedding. For very constrained budgets, a small resort package might be both cheapest and most stress-free choice. If you have more wiggle room, a good wedding planner will help you make the most of your money. 4) Another important item on your checklist is the marriage license. Fortunately, Hawaii makes this easy. You’ll only need to arrive a few days in advance, and the only major requirement is that both the bride and groom appear in person. Hawaii doesn’t have a waiting period or require a blood test, but you’ll need enough time to apply in person on a weekday before the wedding. 5) You’ll also need to research lodging and airfare for your entire party. That means you’ll need to manage a pleasant location that offers a fair price for not only for the bridal couple, but for guests as well. Be sure that your planner or other former brides give the thumbs-up to your lodging before you book it. Airline tickets are another major cost, especially if you’re footing the bill for friends and family. You can buy tickets up to 11 months in advance, and the sooner you buy them, the cheaper they are. With airfare on this scale, try to take advantage of other money-saving tactics such as flying in on a weekday and staying over on a Saturday night. 6) Finally, don’t forget that the whole charm of a destination wedding lies in not having to obsess over details. Be sure to research a great wedding planner, but after that, be willing to roll with the punches and take what comes. With a destination wedding, you can often actually relax enough to enjoy and remember your day, which isn’t always true with more elaborate productions. From choosing your favorite Hawaiian island to picking out foot jewelry or beach-style invitations, there’s plenty to do when it comes to planning a wedding in Hawaii. While a destination wedding is much like any other, they tend to feel more complex simply because of the huge distance involved. The good news is that you can easily get it all done, especially when you choose a resort package, or hire an experienced local wedding planner who can be your eyes and ears and guide you through the requirements and on-site issues. Quiz- Is Your Partner Honest?

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By CD Mohatta Your partner may be good looking. Your partner may be smart and intelligent. Your partner may be a good conversationalist and may have many other qualities. But is your partner honest? Quiz your partner’s honesty- What do we mean by honesty? Does it mean credibility? Does it mean commitment? Does it mean a person who speaks the truth? Yes, when I say honesty, I mean speaking truth. Those who speak truth are reliable people. They never change the words to suit them. They speak the truth whether it pleases or hurts. Why do we need a truth-speaking partner? Quiz the relationship- When you have a relationship, you want somebody whose words can be relied upon. We want somebody who will not play hide and seek with us. We do not want a person whose thoughts and words are different. With that kind of person we will always get hurt. We will never get any pleasure. Such persons will twist their words to blame us for all the ills and walk away hurting us. A true person will not do that. A true person will always acknowledged what we did for the relationship. A true person is a pleasure. A liar is a pain for life. Please quiz your partner’s honesty. Love is Not a Fantasy

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

By Christopher Walker If you hold in your mind a fantasy of meeting a partner who will keep your private life calm, and not disturb your peace, then better you buy a cat or a dog, especially one that doesnt scratch or bite. However, if you are looking for love and sacred relationship, then you better be ready for challenge and confrontation. The purpose of relationship is not pleasure. The purpose of relationship is love (support and challenge) There are many people who become obsessed with peace and therefore, stay single. They are locked away from love, because love is not peace. Love is support and challenge, just as nature intended. Nature is always adjusting herself, supporting the forest, challenging the forest. The cycle is always going on like this, over and over and over. So if you meet someone who only wants peace, you can love them, but you know they can never love you back. They are stuck in half love, unable to turn up for intimacy. The illusion of love comes from injuries from the past that create false expectations of the future. We caused the end of all our past relationships deliberately and consciously. When they ended, we wanted them to end, even if we played victim. Our ego beat us. Our ego can say get rid of that so and so, because they are challenging me The ego, our self esteem, only wants half love. Agree with me or I leave. But if seeking a peaceful relationship is a persons priority, then they cant show up. They might even accuse people of emotional abuse in order to quell the challenges to their comfort zone. People will only be half welcome in their life. Only bring the good bits home. This is delusion. It keeps so many people single and not necessarily all those people want to be single. The ego fights off sacred love. It simply wants to be right. (safe) Chris Walker http://www.innerwealth.com Chris Walker online. Article Submission Software Pulls In Targeted Buying Traffic!

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Davion Wong Article submission software was not in existence when article marketing first emerged as a website promotion strategy some years ago. Today, webmasters or affiliates who are using article marketing simply cannot resist the temptation of using such a tool. They are efficient and effective, often earning back returns that have paid for the cost of these tools many times over. What is article marketing and how does article submission software complement it? Article submission or marketing is an age old technique used to drive traffic. Authors write and submit articles to achieve different goals and objectives. The most common is writing a summarized version of their web page offering handy tips to their readers. Their hope is that the reader would find the article interesting and follow the links either in the articles or author resource box to their websites. Affiliates write as a form of direct marketing, explaining product benefits very often in a problem-solution format before guiding the reader to an affiliate program link hidden within the article. Others write to invite readers to sign up for their newsletters to establish contact and communication. There are many benefits in writing articles for building traffic with or without the help of article submission software. 1. Establish your credibility You can establish yourself as an expert in your topic. This builds trust with your readers. When they read your article, it is the best chance for you to communicate with them. 2. Professional Presentation Secondly, it looks professional. Compared to sending emails which people tend to delete and discard as spam, an article is professional. People find confident in taking the article content seriously and as a rich source of information since articles are often reviewed and edited by article directories. 3. Circulation and Distribution An excellent article gets circulated around to other webmasters and main article distribution channels where your article gets published. This means greater exposure, more traffic and sales and sign ups for you. 4. Search Engine Ranking An optimized article ranks well in the search engines and draw targeted traffic for your keywords. You will receive a backlink from each article that is accepted and published by the article directories. Your websites link popularity and ranking would then improve. Article marketing as you can see is so powerful. Unfortunately, it has its limitations when you submit articles without using article submission software. Submission to article directories takes time. The user interface of each article directory varies and an article has to be formatted differently to suit each article directory. And we are talking about mass article submission to hundreds of article directories for maximum exposure. Obviously, your patience is tested when you have to repeat the process all over again each time you write a new article. Software developers in their ingenuity came up with article submission software to carry out this tedious task of submitting articles to hundreds of article directories for publishing. Most come packed with hundreds of compatible directories and powerful features for article formatting and modification. Submitting articles has never been so easy before. Online Dating For Men - Advice For Successful Online Dating

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By L.K. Reid Online Dating is all the rage these days and is very popular because it yields results. However, there are some inherent drawbacks. One of the primary drawbacks is that women are basically apprehensive to the idea of personally meeting with a man that met online. With all of the recent negative press abound regarding online dating, this cautious attitude may be well justified. Of course, it is wise decision for the females to proceed with caution, however, this creates somewhat of a catch-22. The fear, caution and concern of the females towards online dating makes it extremely difficult for the honest and sincere males who are truly looking for a romantic connection. This dilemma leads us to the question, what can I, as a male, do to overcome this female paranoia of online dating? What is the “secret” for men to succeed in Online Dating? Well guys, to be perfectly honest, there is no perfect answer. However, here are some online dating tips that you can use to increase your chances of success. 1. Patience. First, an most importantly, patience is the key. When you first make contact with your potential romantic connection, keep the conversation low key. Straight away inquiring about her personal information such as her true name or inquiring about her place of residence will seem pushy and arouse her suspicions towards your intentions. 2. Don’t Be Pushy. When chatting online with your potential romantic connection, your initial conversations should be short, sweet and interesting. This way, you have the chance to rapport with her, communicating with each other in a relaxed atmosphere. Don’t rush the relationship and pressure her for a one-on-one meeting. This will only make you appear to be suspicious. Instead, show patience and understanding towards her and the relationship by letting it grow and develop over time. 3. Honesty. Honesty is essential to growing and developing your online dating relationship. Tell the truth about your appearance and employment situation. Being dishonest will undo all of the work that you put forth in building a relationship built on trust and sincerity. Furthermore, the lies that you have told will most certainly be revealed if you do eventually meet and all will be ruined. 4. Photographs. Don’t be shy or embarrassed to show your potential romantic connection the real you. Post photos in your profile that show the “real,” everyday, you. Examples of great photos could be you playing your favorite sport, enjoying your hobby, visiting a famous landmark in your area or even a yearbook photo from high school. And even better, be sure to post a recent photo that shows your body from head to toe, not just a mug shot of your face. 5. Meeting her one-on-one. Once your romance connection feels comfortable meeting with you one-on-one, this is your opportunity to rise to the occasion. Be smart as this is an extremely delicate situation for her, so proceed with caution. The smart move would be to arrange a lunch date at a popular dining spot. In addition, being the true gentlemen that you are, why not ask her to invite a girlfriend along. This will make her feel safe, less apprehensive and more open to communicating with you. As you can see from above, you can be successful and meet your romantic connection by using some basic online dating tips. Just mind your P’s & Q’s, be honest, be sincere, be a gentlemen and most important, be patient. Good Luck! After School Activities That Make Dismissal Time Worth Waiting For

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Khieng Chho School is all about stress, whether wed like to admit it or not. Its all about slaving over the latest math problem, sweating bullets just trying to balance the next chemical reaction, and getting headaches over explaining how Tolkiens Middle Earth is not an allegory for the real world in a hundred words or less. The work is stressful, but if you dont let the stress get to you, then school can actually be something to look forward to. Make that dismissal time: there are hundreds of after-school activities that can fill up those hours in between dismissal and dinner, and they can be fun and educational at the same time! Forget about video games, TV, movies, and loitering in the mall. Pick an after-school activity that you can enjoy without going through the hassle of spending too much money, or ruining your eyes. What after-school activities might you be interested in? Here are a few examples. If you are a sports fanatic, there are many after-school activities related to sports that will tickle your fancy and keep you on your toes. You might want to try out for your schools baseball or basketball team. You might also want to simply practice your skating moves at the local ice rink. Or you could try new sports and flex your muscles like never before: try salsa dancing, or tai chi, or aerobics! The key to enjoying after-school activities is to pick something unique and what else could be more unique than an exercise that could either allow you to be graceful (like ballet) or uncommonly strong (like martial arts)? If you are into writing, then join after-school workshops in poetry and prose. You can also hone your journalistic skills by joining the school newspaper. Whether you are a fiction or non-fiction writer, such activities will allow you to master your craft when youre at your least stressed. Besides, writing can release a lot of pent up energy within, so if you think that math test was grueling, and that chemistry exam was heartbreaking, you can take it all out on a poem and feel your heartstrings relax! If writing isnt your thing, then perhaps you could talk and argue and hone your speaking skills. Join a speech workshop, or join the schools debate team. Like writing, debate can ease stress by allowing you to use your mind to beat an opponents logic, all while using the best words and mixing the best sentences to convince your audience that your side of the argument is the right one. The most skilful debaters sometimes end up as the best lawyers and politicians, so if youre looking for a future in Congress, school might be a good place to start. If youre into acting and want to get a part on Broadway or in Hollywood, then join your schools drama club. This will allow you to practice not only your acting skills, but your production, directing, and costume-crafting talents as well. If you can take the long nights of rehearsals, then drama might make your day. Are you skilled in playing a musical instrument? Then join the school orchestra! This can allow you to not only hone your musical skills, but travel. This is especially true if your musical instrument is your voice: school choirs do a lot of concerts and traveling, and this might be something you will enjoy. If you want to earn money after school, then there are many safe, student-friendly part-time jobs available. If you can stand cleaning floors, serving at cashiers, and even babysitting or dog-sitting, then be prepared to rake in a few extra dollars. Whichever after-school activity you choose, make sure it will benefit you physically, intellectually, and emotionally. And make sure that you have fun: an after-school activity should be something you look forward to everyday. Khieng ‘Ken’ Chho - Online After School Activity Resources. Online Dating via Pay Sites

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Erick Shipmon While online dating through paying membership sites may seem like the safer way for adult dating online, it is important that you get what you pay for. With over 100 free online dating sites, you may have to weed through many inappropriate sites until you get hooked into a good one, but if you’re not getting your money’s worth through your current membership in your online dating service, free may be the way to go. How much is too much? The going rate for joining an online dating service is $20 to $30 a month membership fee. Typically this is done through a credit card (on the reputable sites, since a credit card is traceable, weeding out the weirdo’s) and monthly payments are simply deducted.
There are also sites which use token systems, wherein you purchase a certain number of tokens and one is used each time you make a contact. There is a chance that you will end up wasting your tokens if you do not get replies, though. However, it is a good system if you are out of town a lot and may not be able to use the contacts allotted in your monthly membership fee, which usually do not roll over if unused. Single online dating can take months, even years before you meet someone. So do not cancel your membership just because you meet some one. If you meet someone right away, great. Give it the same amount of time you’ve given your other relationships. But read the small print. If you find you need to cancel your membership, don’t put it off. Forgetting that you are being auto-debited every month can lead to charges way after you’ve forgotten you ever joined an online dating service in the first place. (How will you explain that one?!) Erick Shipmon has been an online marketer since 1997. He currently is the President and CEO of http://www.eDatingPlanet.com which is quickly becoming the hottest and most desirable online dating community on the planet. eDatingPlanet.com online dating services include: E-mail, Live Chat, Live Video Cam, FREE VoIP Broadband Long Distance, and more! Making Time For Your Kids

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Debbie Madson Whether you work at home, stay at home or work full time if you have kids making time for them is the most important priority in your to do list each day. Do you ever have days where you just put the kids to bed and realize you haven’t read any books to them today, gone outside to play or just sat down and played a game of Candyland or Go Fish with them. Somedays they are fed, clothed and happy and you can call it a good day. How can you find little ways to corporate more playing, laughing and enjoying your kids? 1.Make a point to eat together everyday. As kids get older they become busier but make family meal time a must in your house. Whether it is only breakfast and dinner it is important to use the time to talk to your kids and enjoy their company. Consider taking dinner with you if you are on the go. 2.Set a bedtime routine that includes 10 minutes at least with each child. Even if they are 16 you can still go in their room and talk to them for a few minutes. For younger children bedtime is a great time to read or have them read to you. Talk about what their favorite thing they did today was or what they want to do tomorrow. Asking them questions that provides more than a yes or no answer can open the lines of communication as well as not asking too broad questions. Asking a 5 year old what they did in kindergarten may be too hard for them to answer but ask them what they did in circle time or who they ate lunch with they can easily answer. 3.Have special one on one activities with each child each day or an outing once a week. Whether it is something simple like playing a game, letting them help you with a household chore or going out to lunch once a week make it time when they have your full attention. 4.Get your kids involved in making dinner. It may take a little longer when they are younger but it is great quality time with your kids. Not too mention teaching them to cook has many added benefits like instilling healthy eating habits, reiterating school lessons and improving their self esteem. 5.Take your kids with you to run errands, shopping or where ever possible. Listen and sing to kids music with them. Play a game of 20 questions while you are waiting at the doctor’s office. Tell them a story about when you were little. These times can be great teaching moments. Whatever you do, don’t let a day pass that you forget to take time for your kids. Give them a hug and tell them you love them but also show them by your actions throughout the day. I know if you are like me you don’t mean to overlook the time we could be spending with our kids but we get busy, life passes us by and our kids just keep on growing! http://www.kids-cooking-activities.com has kids cooking lesson plans to help you in teaching your kids to cook and giving them activities to explore and learn in the kitchen. Humor and Finding Your Perfect Match

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

By John Kinde Recently, someone I know created a web site to meet Ms Right. In
his site he shared in great detail who he was and what he was
looking for. A great idea and nicely written with lots of humor. After reading it, the humor side of my brain started asking
questions. If I were designing my own personal web site, would it be
appropriate to include Google Ads. Reasons for listing Google Ads. 1. If readers were bored with my biography, they would have convenient places
to go. 2. If readers loved what they saw and they sent their friends to
the site to check me out, their friends could shop for wedding
gifts while they were there. 3. If the site got no responses, at least I’d make a few bucks on
the side. Reasons for not listing Google Ads. 1. The ads might be more interesting than my biography. 2. They might run ads for someone else’s personal web site. 3. They might run ads for divorce attorneys. That got me thinking about seven years ago when I was creating my
own internet personal ads looking for the right person. Did you
know that when you tell people you’re looking for someone with
three eyes, people with only two eyes will respond to your ad
anyway? I also discovered that a generic ad, maybe 25-50 words, usually
received no response. So I experimented with a long-form ad, over 1000 words. And would you believe that I included lots of
humor? Every time I posted the longer ad, I received around 50
replies. I’m not sure whether they were attracted to me or to my
writing! In my ads I included an Online Personals Dictionary with dozens of convenient translations of typical ad phrases into real-world
language. This was a tongue-in-cheek “public service” to help
people understand what personal ads were really saying. Here are a few samples: In shape = Round is a shape. Swimmers build = A whale swims. Honest = Will immediately stop chatting with you once you tell them your age. Open minded = Brains fell out years ago. Good looking = Able to look at things really well. Handsome = A quote from his mother. Educated = Will treat you like an idiot. Masculine = Looks like a caveman. Age is relative = Looks like your uncle. Athletic = Watches sports on TV. Visits gym = Loves looking at self in the mirror. Likes quiet evenings at home, candlelit dinners and walks in the
rain = Not an original thought in his head. Long-term relationship = More than two weeks in length. Love at first sight = When two lonesome, non-selective people meet for the first time. In the ad, throughout my self-description, I would drop in an
occasional bit of humor: “Ive never robbed a bank. Neither have you. Convenience store OK.” The response was overwhelmingly positive. I only received one
negative reply in three posting of the longer, humorous ads. One
person suggested I was bitter. The writer was probably very much
in need of a laugh. The response told me it was definitely not a
match for me. The ad was doing its job. The good news is that I met the love of my life through an online
ad. I now have a terrific relationship and we laugh together every day. Copyright 2005 by John Kinde.
